Purpose: Together we will string-stitch twin sized quilts for Cross Roads House in Portsmouth, NH. It will be an assembly-line style process to maximize our productivity. The quilts will measure a minimum size of 70” x 90" - the photo on the left shows an example of a string quilt design. There will be 3 “stations” so each person doesn’t have to bring their whole sewing room. You may choose your station - simply fill in the form below indicating which station you prefer. Trading spots during the day is fine. There will be a Janome Travel Mate machine for anyone to try stitching on. Here are the stations;
Designer : Organize and lay out strips, creating a design of your choice or following suggestions offered. Rough trim strips if necessary and feed strips to the stitcher. When blocks are complete, arrange them on design wall and then feed them to stitcher again for block assembly.
Bring:
Stitcher: Chain-piece blocks that will be given to you.
Bring:
Presser: Prepare strips for design, press open strips coming from stitcher, rough trim block & threads if necessary, gather scraps & return to designer.
Bring:
All: If available, please bring scrap strips approximately 1 1/2” to 3” wide to share (no need to cut length). To help us be more productive, please divide lights and darks, feminine and masculine or unisex fabrics. Separate solids into one group. Please don’t cut up your good stuff! We want scraps only. Also, no flannel at this time. Hold on to your flannel fabric until our fall Community Outreach Day.
There are lots of YouTube videos on string stitching that you can review if you're not familiar with it. Also if you're not interested in string-piecing, please feel free to bring your own project and we can work on it together.
UPDATE ON FOOD: There will be pizza provided by Flatbread, Gas Light and The Rosa for lunch. Also, snacks and baked goods from Popovers and Kilwins. Also, the library requests that you bring beverages in a sealed container.
